Defining Your Career
|
Consider the following definition of a career and perhaps you will see your career path in a better perspective. A career is when your interest and someone else's needs meet. This definition will be extremely beneficial in helping to define your career needs. It is important to focus mentally on your needs and requirements to be happy in your career.
To effectively plan out your career and look at your needs, you need to look at several areas…
Skills you'd like to use
Type of environment you'd like to be in
Skills you'd like not to use
Talents you'd like to use
Talents you'd like not to use
Type of industry you'd like to be in
Location preferences
Income requirements
These are a few of the items to review to help establish what career is best for you. Once you have established what your specific needs are, you should then prioritize them. Once you have established and prioritized your needs, define the job that will best match them. The best way to do this is to write a job description that incorporates your needs as well as those of the company.
At this point, you will need to focus on the needs of the company. As you do so, your needs will be better met. Unfortunately throughout the selection process, people too often focus on what they want. Once you have established what you want, you must now focus on the company and present what you can do for them. The companies' excitement towards you will continue to grow and this will motivate them to maximize the position they present to you.
Getting the career you want requires looking at both your needs and those of the company. Typically careers are not satisfying because only the needs of one party are met. It is imperative that you fully integrate both.
Once these requirements have been integrated the entire selection process must be presented as a benefit to the company. Allow the company to realize the benefits they will have and in turn your desires will be accommodated. Simply put " Take care of the company and the company will take care of you"
